The College of Humanities and Social Sciences was established on August 1st, 2007 and is now an integral part of National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU). Since the Yang Ming Campus at NYCU has been growing from a primarily biomedical university into a more comprehensive university campus, our College plays a strategic role in this crucial development.

The College of Humanities and Social Sciences currently consists of three graduate institutes.

INSTITUTE OF SCIENCE, TECHNOLOGY, AND SOCIETY

The Institute of Science, Technology, and Society (ISTS) focuses on social and historical studies of science, technology, and medicine, promoting an interdisciplinary community for scholars and students who intend to understand and change the world that is currently heavily influenced by technoscience.

INSTITUTE OF PHILOSOPHY OF MIND AND COGNITION

The Institute of Philosophy of Mind and Cognition (IPMC) is dedicated to studying cognition, whether in humans, other animals, or computers. As understanding cognition requires different disciplinary perspectives, researchers at the IPMC draw on philosophy, neuroscience, psychology, neurolinguistics, and cognitive science in their studies. Traditionally, the IPMC mainly focused on consciousness and the philosophy of cognitive science but has now branched out to include research foci on neuroscience, clinical medicine, imagination, memory, neuroethics, religion, and AI.

INSTITUTE OF VISUAL STUDIES

The Institute of Visual Studies aims to apply innovative research methodologies to investigate visual cultures from the Renaissance to the present, developing interdisciplinary approaches to visual studies, including history of art, photography, film studies, fashion theory, visual sociology, feminist visual theory, museum studies, and critical theory. The Institute is devoted to cross-disciplinary ways of integrating theoretical studies of Asian, Sinophone (including Taiwan, Hong Kong, China), and European and Anglo-American visual cultures.
